ABOUT BABE / CARLA H.

Babe & Carla: Mohawks of Kahnawake

Geographically, we are situated where by half of our communities/families are on the “American side” and the other half on the “Canadian side”. We are fortunate to call ourselves citizens of the Mohawk Nation that has no border line between our communities/families.

Coming from a long history of high steel ironworkers, home was divided between Kahnawake and NewYork. Our connection with both remains strong.

Babe:

Inspired by the cradleboard his nephew was carried on, Babe made his 1st cradleboard at the age of sixteen. After visually studying the cradleboard, he successfully completed the construction of his first board. Today his cradleboards remains in the realm of the Traditional Mohawk style.

Carla:

Her journey into the quilt world began some 28 years ago. What began as a recreational hobby, later in life developed into a profession. Her designs revolve around her cultural teachings and her connection to the natural world.
